Jinn in the Quran?

Notis: Det följande är en reproduktion av artiklen "Jinn in the Quran?"

I seek refuge in God from Satan the rejected.
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Salaamun Alaykum

<< is there any mentioning of "paranormal" beings in the Qur'an.>>

If your question is whether there are entities other than humans and other known entities on earth, then the answer is yes, there are.

[16:8]

... Additionally, He creates what you do not know.

[56:60-61]

We have predetermined death for you. Nothing can stop us - from substituting new generations in your place, and establishing what you do not know.

We also learn from Quran that God sends angels on earth to carry out certain activities. For example:

[2:248]

Their prophet said to them, "The sign of his kingship is that the Ark of the Covenant will be restored to you, bringing assurances from your Lord, and relics left by the people of Moses and the people of Aaron. It will be carried by the angels. This should be a convincing sign for you, if you are really believers."

[3:39]

The angels called him when he was praying in the sanctuary: "GOD gives you good news of John; a believer in the word of GOD, honorable, moral, and a righteous prophet."

God tells us that He sends invisible soldiers to help His messengers and the believers.

[9:26]

Then GOD sent down contentment upon His messenger and upon the believers. And He sent down invisible soldiers; He thus punished those who disbelieved. This is the requital for the disbelievers.

[9:40]

If you fail to support him (the messenger), GOD has already supported him. Thus, when the disbelievers chased him, and he was one of two in the cave, he said to his friend, "Do not worry; GOD is with us." GOD then sent down contentment and security upon him, and supported him with invisible soldiers. He made the word of the disbelievers lowly. GOD's word reigns supreme.  GOD is Almighty, Most Wise.

[33:9]

O you who believe, remember GOD's blessing upon you; when soldiers attacked you, we sent upon them violent wind and invisible soldiers. GOD is Seer of everything you do.

Further, we learn from Quran that Solomon had jinns/devils working for him.

[21:81-82]

For Solomon, we committed the wind gusting and blowing at his disposal. He could direct it as he wished, to whatever land he chose, and we blessed such land for him. We are fully aware of all things. And of the devils there were those who would dive for him (to harvest the sea), or do whatever else he commanded them to do. We committed them in his service.

[34:12-13]

To Solomon we committed the wind at his disposal, traveling one month coming and one month going. And we caused a spring of oil to gush out for him. Also, the jinns worked for him, by his Lord's leave. Any one of them who disregarded our commands, we subjected him to a severe retribution. They made for him anything he wanted - niches, statues, deep pools, and heavy cooking pots. O family of David, work (righteousness) to show your appreciation. Only a few of My servants are appreciative.

<<Is it possible to interact with jinns? Can we derive power from jinn beings?>>

God tells us in [72:6]

"`Human beings used to seek power through jinn beings, but they only afflicted them with a lot of adversity.

From the above we learn that humans do contact jinns and that there could be interaction between humans and jinns.

We also learn from Quran that there are righteous as well as unrighteous jinns:

[72:11]

"`Some of us are righteous, and some are less than righteous; we follow various paths.

[72:13]

"`When we heard the guidance, we believed therein. Anyone who believes in his Lord will never fear any injustice, nor any affliction.

[72:14]

"`Among us are the submitters, and among us are the compromisers.'" As for those who submitted, they are on the right path.

Yes, one can interact with jinns and some may even want to seek power from jinns. But before attempting that one should know what is in store for him/her ahead by being in touch with jinns.

Jinns by definition are fallen angel (18:50) and are descendants of Satan. The majority (disbelievers among them) constantly promote Satan's point of view. God tells us in so many verses that Satan is our ardent enemy -2:208, 6:142, etc. Satan has powers (obviously given by God) and can definitely enforce these if we choose him as our master or Lord. With his powers Satan is capable of doing things which would cause us to go astray and which will surely lead us to Hell. Actually Satan has no power over the believers. The people give Satan power by not choosing God as our Lord and Master. See 16:100 - His power is limited to those who choose him as their master, those who choose him as their god.

As stated earlier God says in [72:6]

"`Human beings used to seek power through jinn beings, but they only afflicted them with a lot of adversity.

This verse indicates that seeking power through jinn beings will only afflict we humans with adversity. Satan misleads his human victims, if we decide to ally with him.

[22:3-4]

Among the people, there are those who argue about GOD without knowledge, and follow every rebellious devil. It is decreed that anyone who allies himself with him, he will mislead him and guide him to the agony of Hell.

The promises Satan makes are always broken as stated below:

[14:22]

And the devil will say, after the judgment had been issued, "GOD has promised you the truthful promise, and I promised you, but I broke my promise. I had no power over you; I simply invited you, and you accepted my invitation. Therefore, do not blame me, and blame only yourselves. My complaining cannot help you, nor can your complaining help me. I have disbelieved in your idolizing me. The transgressors have incurred a painful retribution."

Further, their knowledge is limited, they do not know the future / the unseen. Anyway, believing that any thing or any entity has any power independent of God would constitute idol-worship, which is an unforgivable offense if maintained till death.

[34:14]

When the appointed time for his death came, they had no clue that he had died. Not until one of the animals tried to eat his staff, and he fell down, did the jinns realized that he was dead. They thus realized that if they really knew the unseen, they would have stopped working so hard as soon as he died.

[72:10]

"`We have no idea if something bad is intended for the inhabitants of Earth, or if their Lord wills to redeem them.

The only example we can find in Quran of righteous people using jinns is that of Solomon -see verses 21:81-82 and 34:12-13 quoted above. But he had God's authorization to do so.

Taking all the above into consideration one must avoid being in touch with jinns. It is a great risk on our souls to be in touch with entities that are Satan's representative. Like in 5:90, we are prohibited intoxicants, games of chances, etc. because these are abominations of devil.

I hope that above answers your questions, God willing.

May God bless and be with all of us and guide us to Him.
